This symposium highlights innovative and forward-looking perspectives on socio-scientific issues (SSIs) in chemistry education. It will explore how teachers learn about, plan for, and implement SSIs, as well as emerging frameworks and assessment approaches shaped by current global challenges. Recent developments—such as the Covid-19 pandemic, global energy transitions, the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into everyday life, and advances in green and responsible chemistry—offer rich opportunities for integrating SSIs into chemistry curricula. Examining these dynamic and impactful issues through an international lens, the symposium aims to broaden chemistry educators’ understanding and practices of SSI-based teaching and assessment to make contemporary scientific developments more relevant for chemistry education.
